Something to Laugh about...

So, I was talking to my mom one afternoon this week about a new interesting development in our lives that had that morning made me cry. She and I both were laughing about it because... well sometimes you laugh or cry, and at that point we chose to laugh. Then she told me that I really should share more about my pregnancy, delivery, recovery, etc... and maybe someone would benefit from my experiences. So, after deciding that she was right... I am going to do that. Plus it will be good to journal it better, and my friend Lindsay just recorded her birthing experience on her blog, which I loved reading.

So, WATCH OUT. There might be more text and fewer pics for a little while. But hopefully, someone out there will either enjoy reading it or learn something.

To give you a preview. I decided that there are like 5 areas/milestones of becoming a mother: 1. conception 2. pregnancy 3. delivery 4. recovery 5. breastfeeding
I decided that I am good at 1 out of the 5. Can anyone guess which one?

Looking for a 5K?

My friend, Rachel, has been battling with lymphoma since the beginning of the year. She was one of my Linguistics students and actually married a boy that she met in my class last summer. She has been an inspiration to me as she has been going through chemo. It is starting to look up and the cancer has stopped growing.
Her cousin is organizing a 5K run and 1 mile walk on Saturday, May 22nd in Provo and the proceeds are going to go to help pay for her medical expenses. To find out more information, go to: http://rachelsrun.blogspot.com/
So, take advantage of the beautiful spring weather and go for a run or walk!

The weather

So... a few different friends of mine have written letters to a particular season. Generally it expresses frustration with winter and happiness with other seasons... Well, today was WAY too hot! We had our first visit to BYU today to sell back Skyler's books. Eliza Lane was a champ! I think she likes the campus... we will see if that changes. But on the way home this afternoon I thought it seemed like July! It was so hot! Eliza and I were totally sweating! The car was hot, our skin was hot, our hair was sweaty. It reminded me why I don't like summer. It just gets too hot. I have been concerned ALL winter that with such a mild winter for us we would have a killer summer. So, I thought about writing a letter to the summer. But I learned that if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all... and really at this point my letter would go something like this.

Dear Summer-
I don't like you... please go away!
Sincerely,
Rachel

I would hate to get a letter like that, so I won't write it... and I don't know where to mail it. So, I guess I will just have to work on my attitude. But I am afraid that I might NOT like summer for two reasons now: 1. me 2. Eliza Lane. Don't worry about Skyler. He likes summer! CRAZY!

First outings

We went on a quick walk for our FHE activity today. It started to sprinkle while we were out... but as you can tell... we were prepared. Eliza Lane could see through the clear plastic section.. and was bundled quite warm within her little bubble. She didn't know if she liked it at first... but she seemed to after she fell asleep!

We also went to visit Grandma Hansen over the weekend. It was her longest carseat experience. She was a champ... but she was asleep for most of it!

Being a mom...

Means that you can be paranoid when you go to visit Daddy at "work". Meaning that you cover the baby is a million layers, don't talk to anyone because they might have germs... and only lift up the fleece blanket when you are secure and alone in the makeshift tent. And then 5 minutes later... LEAVE!
Means that

you get cool stuff in your Easter basket like yoga and taebo vhs to help you start getting back in shape. The whole family was excited!!

It means that your husband buys you really pretty flowers...

You get to have exciting Saturday
nights lounging at home in your pajamas while Skyler works til midnight. And take cute pics of Eliza Lane to entertain the two of you!

You can go to DI and find some fun basket stuffers! ...And then spend some quality time disinfecting them!

You decide to document every special moment (like cleaning up from her 1st blow-out diaper!)

And her first real bath after her umbilical stub finally fell off!

She really enjoyed the bath... but didn't enjoy having to get all dried off and dressed again...

The last 2 1/2 weeks...

So, it is kind of sad that I haven't really updated the last 2 1/2 weeks and Eliza Lane is now almost 4 weeks old... that means that over half of her life is undocumented on our blog... But I guess it is ok. One of my friends/cousin-in-laws mentioned that she vows, even though she is currently pregnant, not to let her baby take over her blog. That is a valiant stand... however, my baby already "ate my blog" so... why turn back now?

So, here are some highlights of the last couple weeks.

Grandmas came to town!!

I think one of the best parts of having a baby was having my mom and Skyler's mom come and help out! I don't know how anyone has a baby without that kind of help!
They cooked and bought food, they cleaned... even the floors on their knees, they helped us figure out what we needed, they visited and talked when I needed companionship, they helped me take naps or runs errands, they took turns changing diapers, feeding, rocking, and walking with Eliza Lane, they encouraged us even when we were tired and still haven't figured out the best way to do anything yet, they shared ideas and things that did or did not work for them, they just left us better off than how they found us!!!
What a blessing to have such great moms!
